Toast Toppers
Food writer Nigel slater once famously stated: It is impossible not to love someone who makes toast for you. Yes! That is indeed true. Toasts are hard to resist, and they are the crunchy canvas for endless scrumptious toppings.
The best part of toast is that it works anytime. Be it 2 AM or 2 PM, a slice of toast peps you up. Whether you have hunger pangs at midnight or a don’t-know-what-to-eat kind of craving, toasts treat you well. Make it for breakfast, brunch, or an evening snack or even dinner. It is up to you.
Let’s dive into some exotic toast recipes that can be prepared comfortably at your home, with simple and minimum ingredients. Top with an old favourite or conjure up something out of nothing. Or challenge your spouse and kids to a Toast Topping contest, and sit back to judge 😊
Easy cheezy: No recipe needed. Just slather on a generous spread of mozzarella (or any other) cheese, with chopped green chillies as per tolerance, and grill.
Chatpatta Channa: It’s finger-licking good! Boil channa. Sautee in dash of olive oil with chaat masala and a pinch of garam masala. To assemble, simply spread white butter on your toast, and top it with the channa. Garnish with spring onions and/or cilantro for a flavourful finish.
PS: Left over channa masala works great here too.
Corn-u-copia: You can’t go wrong with the classic spinach and corn combo. Heat oil to smoking point, add corn and thin ribbons of spinach at high heat. Cool before you top your toast. Grate some fresh cheese on top.
Option: Swap out spinach for spring onions and see how you like it.
Go bananas: Bananas and peanut butter are a perfect mid-day pick-me-up snack when you crave something sweet. Slather on some chunky peanut butter on your toast. Top with a banana cut diagonally. Drizzle some honey over it. And you’re good to go!
Cinnamon Honey: Who doesn’t love sweet and salty combinations? Drizzle this amazing toast with multi-floral honey, sprinkle on a dash of organic cinnamon powder, add chopped almonds for an extra crunch. Yummylicious!
Snappy Apple: There’s nothing quite like the fresh crunch of your favourite fruit to kick start your morning. Try almond butter spread for an extra-healthy kick. Chop up a granny smith apple and top. Sprinkle cinnamon powder and you’re done.
Dum Dum Aloo: Toast meets Indian-inspired aloo dum. With a generous spread of mint chutney and freshly made (or left over!) aloo dum, this is a fresh and vibrant twist to the toast. Garnish with dill and it’s ready for the perfect snack or even a light meal.
Simply Salad: Here’s a fresh flavor pairing for you. Chop up cabbage + onions + capsicum + tomatoes+ apple. Sprinkle on some lime, and fresh thyme if you have it. Pile up your salad on a ghee-roasted slice of OvenOrg bread, and you’re good to go!
Marvellously Minty: A bit of mint chutney can go a long way. Spread a generous bit of chutney on your toast and top with anything that takes your fancy! Some suggestions:
- Pineapple + chilly flakes
- Falafels + red onions
- Grilled paneer + onions
Mast Mushroom: Saute onion & tomatoes in a pan, add mushrooms, cook for 5-7 mins. Season with black pepper & soya sauce. Garnish with chopped capsicums.
